London’s food markets are under threat by the surge of developments taking hold of the city. These markets act as cultural pillars to the local communities. Market Shrines is a collaboration with set designer Saskia Wickins. Inspired by London’s many food markets, we drew inspiration from the piles of disregarded waste that line the market streets appearing as the days trading come to a close.
Neatly stacked, arranged, bound, they are propped up against lamp posts acting as markers of the day gone by. These piles create market totems, sculptural shapes adorned with bright colours and bold typography, off set by the lighting from the lamp posts they lean against.
The following images were made using waste from London’s food markets, inspired by their totems and intended to pay homage to the beauty of these often overlooked market shrines.
